How to arrive at the venue?

The venue (Hotel “Caro”) is not too far from the Bucharest International Airport “Henri Coanda” Otopeni (OTP). It takes usually about 15-30 min of drive (but up to 45-60 in very crowded, holiday-related instances). Car sharing UBER and BOLT are available (it costs between 50Lei=10E and 100Lei=20E).

Standard Taxis are waiting at the exit from the arriving hall (upper floor, right exit). A cheaper variant are Taxis-by-request: use self-booking touch screens (take left after leaving the baggage claim area, upper floor) and then go out by the left exit to wait your car.

The cheapest travel to Bucharest from the Airport is by train (every 40 min, 24/24); you will arrive at the North Railway-station in 20 min, for only 6Lei=1,2E 0r 10Lei=2E -if you want to reserve a seat. From there you can take the subway (M1 to “Piata Victoriei” then M2 to “Aurel Vlaicu”) and at the end you will have a 12-15 min walk to the Hotel “Caro”. Total travel time will be about one hour (except the waiting time for the train). See below details about the subway!

Search beforehand a cash-machine (ATM) at the airport. You need local currency cash for the Taxi and may be easy for subway tickets also.

General information

The time in Bucharest is EET (GMT+2, summer time +1), one hour after west-Europe.

The weather looks good! After weeks of rain and wind, the forecast is very promising:  up to around 30C by day and as low as 14-19C by night; no rain.

AC Wall-Sockets are type F 230V 50Hz.

Cell phones in roaming are under EU tariff regulation. For phones registered outside EU, the roaming may be quite expensive, especially for data -check with your provider and block mobile data transfer. You may want to buy a local prepaid SIM -that looks simpler than in other countries.

WiFi will be available in the congress area and is generally free and with acceptable speed in hotels.

How to move around in Bucharest?

Congress venue, restaurants, shopping, sight-seeing, museums -all in a single map, made for you:

The best way to move around in Bucharest is by the Subway. It is the quickest compared with the heavy street traffic. You can buy tickets with cash at any subway entrance and by card at some vending machines (not everywhere). See here “METROREX” TRIP TITLES: 5Lei=1E for one trip, 10Lei=2E for two trips, 40Lei=8E for 10 trips; for one day, three days or one-week pass you have first to purchase a dedicated card.

Car-sharing Uber and Bolt are available and a good option when not knowing the routes and also at late hours. Taxis called for you by hotel receptions and restaurants are from trusted companies and may be an alternative but generally accept only local currency cash.

Want details about currency and payments?

Romanian currency: Romanian New Leu (RON). 1 Euro≈5 Lei. All payments in Romania are made in local currency! International cards (VISA, MasterCard, Maestro) are accepted in hotels, big restaurants, supermarkets, department stores (as posted at the entrance door). You may find exchange offices and cash machines (ATM) at the airport hotels, in bank offices and in big stores. Take usual precautions when using cash machines in stores or in the street (always prefer the ones located at banks, because they are under continuous surveillance). If you want to change cash use exchange offices in banks; we do not recommend using small exchange offices on street-side and never accept exchange at persons, irrespective of the story they tell!

Do you have questions about security and safety?

General security/safety precautions are the same as in other EU big cities.

Avoid walking alone by night in unlighted or lonely areas! Be careful with your belongings and pockets in crowded areas and buses! Prefer the subway for public transportation. You may use taxis (you can ask the hotel reception, restaurants’ staff, etc. to order a Taxi for you). Uber and Bolt car-sharing are also available.

The central Victoriei square lies in front of the Government building, so it is a frequent place for public meetings (mainly anti-government demonstrations). These are generally peaceful and civilized. Anyhow, if there are big crowds or you notice nervous groups, it is better to keep a certain distance and try to shy away from the square.
